Red Carpet Wrap Up

I'm not able to finish a blog these days. I've got a couple started, but I needed to get the red carpet wrap up posted before it's too far in the past.  This year, it seemed everyone played it safe. No real disasters and nothing knocked my socks off. However, there were a lot of pretty dresses. Here's my take.

What I liked:
 Hooray for color!

Mila was one of my favs.

 Pretty

Still loving that the trend for young girls is to cover up. George on the Fashion Police last night was talking about how the trashy look is out. Yay!

She has looked great the whole award season and this was her best! I just wish she had a happier smile.

Julianna was one of my top picks of the night! Loved it.

This was Rick's top pick. This seemed to be the it dress of the night. I think the dress is fine, but I adore the girl. She was so cute in her interviews and I loved her in The Help.

Loved the color on her, loved that it had some shape and style. She did very well!

Another top pick for me. I love Michelle Williams. I think this dress fit her personality very well. Cute, quirky and feminine. It would have been my favorite except the back of the dress was bad!

I loved that she took a risk. This seemed to be the only unique dress on the carpet. Way to go Gweneth!

What I didn't like:
Beach hair!  Come on girls, glam it up a little for the big show.  Liked the dresses though.

All-sequin gowns. Not horrible, but none of these did anything for me. Kinda boring IMHO. Maybe they were better in person.

I adore Emma Stone and I don't hate this look, but the red hair, red dress and red carpet seemed too much. I like the style of the dress, but the bow seems like it is swallowing her. Apparently, she also faux pas-ed by wearing a dress similar to one made famous by Nicole Kidman in 2007.
Ah yes, that is how it's done.

I'm so over these people:

Clooney- ugh. What happened to cute Doug Ross from ER. He seems so full of himself these days. The older he gets the younger his women get. Ick. Give me a handsome Hugh Jackman family man any day over Playboy Peter Pan.

Brad and Angelina. I've never been much a Brad Pitt fan. I've liked Angie, mostly because I thought Lara Croft was fun, but it's not like she's Meryl Streep or anything. It's weird to me how they are almost worshiped. And why isn't everyone talking about how grossly skinny she has become? Her beauty is outweighed (no pun intended) by how unhealthy she looks.

I thought her sticking her leg out for every photo was ridiculous. Makes her seem even more out of touch. Funny pics have popped up on the web since. Here are a few of my favs:

This one is by far my fav.

Worst dressed goes to:
Yikes. Totally J-Lo though. I'm also over her. I don't think it was flattering at all. She looked like the token tramp of the award shows.

President's Day Weekend

We had a great holiday weekend! I had work off on Friday so after we dropped the kids at school we headed up to Kamas. We tried a new trail, North Fork Loop, and loved it. It was pretty steep to begin with, but then leveled out and was beautiful.

We never found the actual loop part of the trail, but skied up for a few miles and then turned around. I thought this tree that bent over was fun.

We decided to stop at the outlet mall on our way back down the canyon. We scored. The Colombia outlet was having a winter clearance sale. I found two coats. A lighter one (reg $125 sale $45) and a new ski parka (reg $250 sale $65). Rick found some ski socks and we looked at shoes for Isaac.

We ended up shopping so long that we didn't have time to go change from our ski gear before heading to a friends birthday party at a Thai restaurant downtown.

Saturday we ran errands and spent some time with Rick's family. Sunday we went to church and spent some time with my family. (Happy 70th to my dad!)

Monday we cleaned the house and headed up skiing again. We did our regular trail (Beaver Creek) but decided to go farther than we usually go on the trail. The snow was a little sticky, but all in all a great trip.

Notice the new purple parka!

We stopped again at the outlet malls and bought shoes for Isaac and some light hikers for Rick (reg $110 sale $33).  Seriously a great weekend.

On the way home we picked up Zane and Isaac who spent the holiday at their mom's house. We definitely missed them this weekend!

The Sunny Side of the Street

Big snow storm last night. Check out the difference between my yard this evening and the yard across the street.

And now to offend my pet-owning friends

The other day I was in Sam's club and there was a lady there with her dog. The dog was in the baby seat of her cart. She was standing at the food counter laughing and feeding her dog pieces of her pretzel. I admit, it was a very cute dog, but I was amazed at how this woman was flaunting it a place that was clearly inappropriate for pets. It seems more and more often pets are showing up in public places that are not designated for pets. I see them in the mall, grocery store, Home Depot. It drives me crazy. Your pet is not an accessory, it is an animal and for many reasons you should leave it at home when running your errands.

1. Some people have a very real fear of animals. Whenever I see someone with their dog in a public building, I think about people I know who would freak out regardless of the dog's size or cuteness. Even if the fear is irrational, people should be able to go to a store and not worry about dealing with their fear of animals.

2. Cleanliness. I realize you may not be disgusted sharing food with your pet or kissing them on their mouths or having their hair all over your clothes, but not everyone feels that way. By nature, animals are dirty. They lick themselves and everything around them, they sniff and scratch all manner of vileness, and their version of cleaning up after going to the bathroom often involves getting their feet in it. There is also the constant shedding. Please note that most of us do not want all those germs and hair in our grocery store.

I understand many people feel differently about pets and cleanliness, and if I'm in your pet-friendly home, I will be respectful that you've chosen to live in filth (joking, settle down.) However, if you have a cat, I will not eat anything made in your kitchen. You may think those fresh-out-of-the-litter-box paws aren't on your counter tops, but I assure you that when you're not around, your cat is on the kitchen counter. I remember one of my dad's employees used to make candy for the office during the holidays. More than once, we found cat hair in the candy. Ick.

3. Allergies. I am allergic to animals, cats mostly, and I know people who have strong allergies to many animals.  I don't expect people to de-pet their home for me to come over. I know that if I am going to someone's home who has animals, I may have to take Benadryl, or not stay long. But I think people should be able to have a reasonable expectation that when they go to the grocery store they will not have an allergy attack. My sister has allergies. She does nails out of her home and a couple of her clients bring their dogs with them to their appointments. I am baffled that people are not more considerate of other people's space. It's like a pet-owner bubble where they can't see anything beyond their own feelings for their animal.

4. Not everyone likes to be licked and/or pounced on. I've been hiking with friends who bring their dog. I get that the dog wants to run around outside and I don't generally have a problem with it. What drives me crazy is when their dog runs through a stream or mud and then jumps all over me, and the owner just laughs like the dog is so cute. I realize the dog is just doing what dogs do, my bigger issue is the response from the owner. Many don't attempt to keep their dog from ambushing everyone they encounter or offer an apology when they do.
I have met some very responsible owners who watch their animals and are respectful that not everyone is a pet-person. I appreciate these people. I have met a handful of dogs that I have really liked. I'm pretty sure it's because the owners are responsible and took the time to discipline their pets. Once I had a friend bring her dog cross-country skiing with us. I was worried because skiing is much better when you have a good track to ski in, and dogs notoriously pounce all over the ski trail ruining the nice track. This friend had trained her dog to stay off the ski tracks. It was great. I actually enjoyed having him along with us. My friend was always aware of what her dog was doing and was very respectful of everyone whom we encountered on the trail. Consequently, I love her dog. I would almost consider owning a dog if it was like hers. There is such a huge difference between well disciplined pets and those who are not.
This may seem like I'm an animal-hater, I assure you I am not. I understand that pets add a great deal to some people's lives, which I think is great. To clarify, it's not pets that I have the problem with, it's some pet owners. Too many are not willing to put forth the time and effort to discipline their pets and don't consider anyone else when parading their animals all over town. It seems to be getting worse and I am baffled that store owners and patrons don't make a bigger deal of it.

Busy Saturday

What an action packed Saturday. It started with a breakfast party at Little America. Our dear friend Cindy was in town so some of the old gang from the singles ward got together to catch up.

I went right from breakfast to Cynthia's famous Valentine's brunch- again with old friends from the singles ward.

Cyn always does a beautiful and delicious spread.

I had so much fun catching up with old friends. I've really missed having good girlfriends the past few years. It fed my soul to have some girl time.

Between girly parties, we had a 13-year-old nerdfest (aka D&D party) at our house. Isaac and his friends spent a few hours getting their characters made and set up for their game. They are a cute bunch of kids and I'm glad Isaac has found such nice friends.

The evening ended with a birthday dinner party for my friend Laura. Yum- Red Iguana!

It was a fabulous day.
